5 Best Tech Ads In The Last 35 Years

Association of Independent Commercial Producers declared Apple’s ad as the year’s best moving image marketing. Apple’s “welcome home” ad was given the award for Advertising Excellence in the single commercial category. A Spike Jonze direction, the ad shows a woman (FKA Twigs) and how, after returning from a busy workday, when she asks her HomePod to put something on, her temperament changes for the better after listening to the song played by the device.

Let us embark on the journey to reminiscent the 35-year long history of tech commercials and how they promoted their product in the most artistic ways.

The first one that strikes out was the Super Bowl ad way back in 1984. Directed by Ridley Scott, this add describes the connections among the soulless corporate office spaces and PC consumerism during the 1980s to the George Orwell’s apocalyptic ‘1984’. It shows an army of mindless identical workers, being hypnotized by a depiction of Big Brother as a woman in a vibrant attire breaks the screen by a mallet, upsetting the rule of personal computing with a promise of a new world while introducing the Macintosh and declaring “1984 won’t be like 1984”.

Considerably with a more upbeat and relaxed concept, the 26-commercial campaign for the Dell computers was quite popular during the early 2000s. It features a teenage high school student with a charming personality who convinces the parents of his schoolmates to buy these computers.

Another ad that was light on viewers while providing a sort of an entertaining back and forth between a perfectly suited and formally inclined PC with a laid back, hoodie-totting Mac, John Hodgman and Justin Long representing both the characters respectively. This commercial highlighted the comparison between different features of Mac computers (like being dual compatible with windows, Time Machine and iMovie) with its counterparts in PC. Adweek, in 2010, declared this as the best campaign of the first decade of the new century.

Between 2002 and 2011, the infamous campaign of Verizon stayed in everyone’s mind to this day. It shows a man in large glasses and a Verizon who takes testing the strength of the signals of this wireless service to an extreme and travels to the most secluded parts around the globe and call people to ask them “Can you hear me now?” donned with the title of Test Man, he won the award for “Most Mysterious Pitchman” from entertainment weekly.

Another ad that touched many souls with its minimalistic approach and simplicity was a Google commercial that aired during the Super Bowl in 2010. Depicting the story of a couple and how they went from dating to marrying and starting a family all through the page of the Google Search. Being the most popular ad during the time, its concept took roots as a comment in a Google brief “remind people what they love about Google search.”
