The Current State of Social Media Algorithms [Infographic]

Social media algorithms are constantly evolving. And as marketers, it's our job to understand the way these platforms work so we can optimize our content to best be shared on any and all of the platforms we live on. As user bases grow and feeds become jam-packed with content, the social media platforms are proactively adjusting algorithms and trying to make sure they always deliver users the content that matters most to them. But, clearly, this definition of "what matters most" varies by channel.  For example, Facebook currently puts the highest value on "meaningful interactions" which ranks family and friends content higher along with the engagement of content. Their purpose for this latest update is to get people talking and bring back the "social" element to Facebook.  Understanding these algorithm changes and why the platform made this adjustment is helpful for us when building and evaluating …

Despite the trending hashtag #deletefacebook and a growing distrust in Facebook, the world’s biggest social network managed to grow even bigger in terms of active users. But even though user numbers are growing Zuckerberg’s company did fail to convert this into a growth of revenue.

As this graphic shows, the average revenue generated through every single user has been in decline since last quarter, resulting in a slight loss of total revenue for the company. With the effects of the bad publicity on the company’s key business figures not fully visible yet, the next quarter’s report might show some even more serious damage on Facebook’s performance.

Facebook Remains Strong Despite "Important Challenges" [CHART]
Despite the Cambridge Analytica scandal still swirling around Facebook, resulting in a grilling at the hands of the U.S. Congress for CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the spurring on of the #Delete Facebook movement, the company recorded strong quarterly figures for Q1 this year - including user growth. In this chart though, we're concentrating on revenue and profit. Although there was a dip in revenue compared to the previous quarter, net income rose and both figures are healthily up on a year-on-year basis.

Behind this project were Tetsuzo Matsuda, who was already in the elections in 2014, and Norio Murakami, vice president of Softbank and former employee of Google. Both ensure that the machines are capable of developing "fair and more balanced" policies.

But this attempt to conquer politics is just one of the great milestones of artificial intelligence. Since the beginning of research in this field, which began in the 1940s, and especially since the 1990s, with the latest technol…

Younger Consumers Behind in Brand Interaction on Social Media CHART

Image
Younger Consumers Behind in Brand Interaction on Social Media CHART
This chart focuses on Generation Z and Millennials and the extent to which the youngest generations interact with brands on social.

Despite Generation Z spending longer on social media each day than Millennials (nearly 3 hours vs. 2 hours 39 mins), the youngest generation are actually less likely to be interacting with brands during this time.

Across all the brand-related actions taking place on social, Gen Z are behind Millennials. While 1 in 4 Millennials have visited a brand’s social network page in the last month, for example, the figure for Gen Z is just 20%.

Beyond people known in real life, Millennials are most likely of all to follow brands they like on social. But for Gen Z, the picture is slightly different and they’d rather follow actors than brands. For this group, social is more likely to be a source of entertainment and a way to keep up with favorite celebrities, than a place for direct brand interaction.

The Content Getting Flagged On You Tube Chart

While 76 percent of all removals through automated flagging occurred before anybody viewed the content, human flagging is also important and effective. You Tube relies on a huge community of human flaggers around the world and India, the U.S. and Brazil are the top-three nations by human flagging volume.

The following infographic shows the reason videos were flagged by that community. It is important to remember that a single video can be flagged multiple times or for several reasons. Sexual content had 9.1 million flags (30 percent of the total) while spam or misleading videos had 8 million (26.…

Facebook Tries to Wake up from Its Worst Nightmare after the Scandal of Data Leak

The Facebook scandal shows the false unhelpfulness of social networks: the data is your price.

The multiple but delayed explanations were given by Facebook before the nightmare generated by the data leakage of millions of users have not prevented the firm from closing the week with a serious deterioration in its image and a sharp drop in its stock market value.

The facts were unleashed by admitting the signature on March 16 that it was analyzing reports that the British consultancy Cambridge Analytica had data on 50 million users that had been collected in 2013 before Facebook imposed new measures in 2015 to guarantee its Privacy.

Can Blockchain Tech Prevent Art Theft ? infographic

Image
Can Blockchain Tech Prevent Art Theft ? infographic
Blockchain isn't the bulletproof technology many people think it is, but there are still plenty of yet undiscovered applications for it. One such application is in the art world where blockchain technology can be used to prevent art theft in the digital art world or even prove provenance in the physical art world.

Provenance is important when buying art. International art theft is a huge issue and has been for generations - there are currently 51,000 pieces of stolen art registered by Interpol. Blockchain can provide a digital trail proving provenance for a work of art when you are buying or selling it, giving each party assurances you aren’t getting accidentally roped into something illegal.

Digital art is probably stolen much more often than physical art, and blockchain can help to prevent that as well. Public keys provide access to the information using a private key, and both buyers and sellers can assure the time stamps and has…

The tech firm managed to surpass some of the biggest tech giants in Google, Apple, Facebook and even Microsoft. 20% of the Americans felt that ‘none of the above’ tech companies made any positive impact on the society.

In most of the surveys, Amazon regularly stays on the top. The company also secured the top position in a poll which was held last year by The Verge

One of the greatest aspects of Amazon is that it never ceases to amaze people with its growing and improved services. Moreover, Amazon also tries to become even a more popular company by using its ever-growing popularity and reach.

Did you know how Many US Dollar Bills Are There In Circulation? infographic

Image
Did you know how Many US Dollar Bills Are There In Circulation? infographic
When you think about it, the journey of each individual currency note is pretty incredible.

After being printed or minted, each bill is then passed between people and businesses to facilitate transactions. If it’s a $1 or $5 bill, it changes hands on average about 110 times per year – and if it’s a $20 bill, it’s more like 75. The interesting part is that almost every transaction is linked to the one before it, and the series of subsequent transactions for each bill creates a unique, broad story.

By the time a bill is retired, it would have facilitated many hundreds of transactions that enabled everything from the purchase of used cars to the shadier deals in underground markets. It’s a pretty interesting tale for such a little piece of paper.

Does Influencer Marketing Still Drive Brand Discovery?

Image
Does Influencer Marketing Still Drive Brand Discovery?
This chart looks at the most impactful forms of brand discovery in 2018, and see how a much-discussed contender, influencer marketing, compares.

Despite a fragmented media landscape, it’s mainstream resources like search engines, TV ads and word-of-mouth recommendations that are the top sources of brand discovery. While it may have lost top spot to search engines in 2016, and is not the mainstay of mass media it once was, TV ads still offer impressive penetration. Even though 43% of Internet users ad block, 3 in 10 discover brands through ads seen on line.

It’s worth highlighting the gender split in the brand discovery journey. Social sources like word-of-mouth or social media recommendations are particularly effective with women, whereas men are likely to find brands through content like TV shows or websites as well as through friends.

Facebook Outlines New Video Monetization and Promotion Tools, Focusing on Facebook Watch

Facebook has released a new set of monetization options and best practices for video creators as it seeks to build interest in its Watch platform. And while The Social Network offers significant audience potential, it has its work cut out for it, both in terms of developing consistent audience for Watch programs, and in establishing publisher trust, which has been shaken by recent News Feed shifts. But the revenue potential alone in digital video is likely worth the investment – in order to encourage video creators to the platform, The Social Network has outlined these new updates. Monetization OptionsA key area in getting more content across to Facebook Watch will be in monetization, and providing significant enough incentive for publishers to invest the required time and effort. This is a difficult one for Facebook, ad YouTube already has a well-established monetization framework in place, which prov…
